From the First Mother Connection Newsletter
April 1, 1982, Issue #1
Throughout our community there are many special interest groups and new enrichment programs developed for children of various ages. All are needed and welcome, and we applaud their efforts. There is, however, one special group that has been overlooked in the past. This very special group is mothers. Because of the demands placed on mothers, the need for support and enrichment for this group is so obvious, one can only wonder why there hasn't been an organization already developed to focus directly on their needs.
About one and a half years ago, two friends were talking about the joys and problems of motherhood. They commented on how beautiful it was to watch the children grow and develop, but how difficult it was to be creative and stimulating parents yet still find time for their own interests. They talked about how isolating motherhood can be and how out of touch mothers can become with their personal and professional skills. They discussed the importance of friendship, support, understanding, appreciation and acceptance. They thought that it would be great if there were a place where mothers could go for information, resources, recreation, enrichment and support.
For the next year and a half these two mothers formed a group to assess what was available to mothers and their children in the Greater Lawrence area. The group found the choices limited and that mothers had to run from one organization to another to meet their needs. The group became committed to sponsoring an organization that focuses on mothers and children. This new non-profit organization is called The Mother Connection.
Our goals are to provide information, resources, recreation, and support for mothers and their children and to provide the opportunity for women to share their expertise and interests.
Although our focus is primarily on mothers and children, it is not our intention to minimize the importance of fathers and their individual needs. We will also be sponsoring family activities and will welcome fathers' comments and participation in events that interest them.
We thank all the people who have supported this project so enthusiastically, with special appreciation to our husbands for all their help and encouragement. We are very proud and happy to introduce The Mother Connection.
